Song of Bernadette

Jennifer Warnes has always been one of my favorite vocalists. Her voice seems to come from another time; it soars and it glides through songs like it’s lived a thousand years.
During the 80s she was mainly known for movie themes. She duetted with Joe Cocker for the gorgeous Buffy Sainte-Marie penned “Up Where We Belong” from An Office and a Gentleman, and she duetted with Bill Medley for “I’ve Had The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing. She also had a hit in the late 70s with “Right Time of the Night.”

Sadly her CDs have never received the mainstream attention they truly deserve.

One of her most shining moments is the CD "Famous Blue Raincoat," a collection of Leonard Cohen songs.

While cruising through YouTube I found this performance of “Song of Bernadette,” which she co-wrote with Leonard Cohen.

Here are the lyrics:

There was a child named Bernadette
I heard the story long ago
She saw the queen of heaven once
And kept the vision in her soul
No one believed what she had seen
No one believed what she heard
That there were sorrows to be healed
And mercy, mercy in this world

We’ve been around, we fall, we fly
We mostly fall, we mostly run
And every now and then we try
To mend the damage that we’ve done
Tonight, tonight I just can’t rest
I’ve got this joy here inside my breast
To think that I did not forget that child
That song of Bernadette

So many hearts I find, broke like yours and mine
Torn by what we’ve done and can’t undo
I just wanna hold you, come on let me hold you
Like bernadette would do
I just wanna hold you, won’t you let me hold you
Like Bernadette would do
